This week on PGA Tour: WGC-Bridgestone Invitational

It’s a stellar field this weekend in Akron for the World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational. This week begins a hugely significant stretch on the PGA Tour. After this week, the PGA Championship is on tap, followed by a tour stop, the four events of The FedEx Cup Playoffs in a five-week span, then the Ryder Cup.

Last year, Adam Scott won this title by four strokes. The highlight of the victory came after Scott’s final birdie putt fell into the hole and it came from his caddie. Steve Williams, recently fired by Tiger Woods at the time of Scott’s victory, took over the Australian’s bag, then called Scott’s win “the best win of my career.”

This is Scott’s first tournament since choking away the British Open by bogeying the final four holes on Sunday. He is +1600 at WagerWeb.com to repeat.

Tiger Woods, who finished third at the British Open, is the +400 favorite and for good reason. He won this event in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009. Should Tiger Woods make it 8-of-14 this week, he would become the first player in PGA Tour history to win eight times on the same course. He also would join Sam Snead as the only players to win the same event eight times: Snead won eight Greater Greensboro Open titles in 27 years at two different venues.

Tiger has the most career wins in World Golf Championship events with 16. Geoff Ogilvy is a distant second with three.

World No. 1 Luke Donald, who could lose that top spot this week, is the +1200 second favorite at WagerWeb.com. He tied for second a year ago and has three top-10s in seven starts at Firestone. Donald is coming off a gritty T5 at the British Open.

Lee Westwood is at +1600 with Scott. The last three times Westwood has played 72 holes at this tournament (he WD’d after two rounds in 2010), he managed top-10 finishes. Six of his last seven rounds on the weekend here have been in the 60s.
Phil Mickelson hasn’t been playing well of late and is at +3200 this week. . He’s had a WD, a T-65 and two missed cuts in his past four starts. He hasn’t won at Firestone since it became a World Golf Championship in 1999, but he did win on the Akron course in 1996, when the tournament was known as the World Series of Golf.
