Once the coin toss is over – a hugely popular prop bet because bettors like to get off to a winning start on Super Bowl Sunday – the MVP award is the most popular prop bet for the NFL’s championship game. And in no surprise, the two star quarterbacks are the WagerWeb.com Super Bowl bets favorites to win the award at Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday in Indianapolis.
The New England Patriots are 3-point favorites over the New York Giants on WagerWeb.com in a rematch of Super Bowl XLII, won 17-14 by New York in one of the NFL’s biggest upsets. Pats QB Tom Brady, who would have broken Dan Marino’s single-season record for passing yards this season if not for Drew Brees, is the -125 favorite. Brady won the MVP awards in Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXVI but was passed over in New England’s most recent Super Bowl win for receiver Deion Branch (who is back with the Pats). Another MVP award would tie Brady with 49ers legend Joe Montana for the most in NFL history.
Giants QB Eli Manning, who almost threw for 5,000 yards this season and has been nearly flawless during the playoffs with 8 TD passes against just one interception, is the second-favorite at +200. Manning was the Super Bowl MVP when these teams met four years ago, throwing for 255 yards, two TDs and a pick. Not huge stats, but Manning also led the game-winning 83-yard drive, capped by the winning TD pass to Plaxico Burress. This marks the first Super Bowl ever to match starting QBs who have been named Super Bowl MVP.
A quarterback has won the MVP award 24 times, which is obviously more than all the rest of the positions combined. A QB has won it the past two years and four of the past five. But a signal-caller hasn’t been named Super Bowl MVP three years in a row since the early 1980s.
The non-QB with the shortest odds is Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski at +700 on WagerWeb.com. He set numerous tight end records this season as Brady’s top target but is dealing with a high-ankle sprain that will leave him less than 100 percent. A tight end has never won Super Bowl MVP.
The non-offensive player with the shortest odds is Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul at +4000. The second-year player was Top 5 in the NFL in sacks this year. A defensive player has won the MVP award just twice this century. Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes is +5000 to win the award. A kicker has never been named Super Bowl MVP.
