Wednesday college basketball odds: No. 12 Minnesota at Northwestern

Is Minnesota a true Big Ten contender? If the Gophers are, they need to win games like Wednesday’s at Northwestern or else Minnesota will head to Wisconsin this weekend on a three-game losing streak. Minnesota opened as a 10-point favorite on WagerWeb.com. Check our current lines.

It’s hard to fault Minnesota’s two-game skid as they both came to No. 5 teams in the nation, Indiana and Michigan. The Gophers have been off since losing 83-75 at home to the Wolverines last Thursday. The Wolverines held the lead for the final 33 minutes of the game and finished with 13 steals to fuel their fast break. Austin Hollins led the Gophers (15-3, 3-2) with 21 points and four steals, and Trevor Mbakwe had 13 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Andre Hollins was drawn into early foul trouble, but he came alive after halftime to finish with 13 points and four assists. The Gophers crept back in the game after falling behind by 19 points early in the second half but squandered some opportunities to really make the Wolverines worry. Joe Coleman missed three of four free throws in the final 4 minutes.

Hollins is averaging a team and career-high 14.3 ppg this season, 10th-most in the Big Ten Conference. He is fourth in scoring in conference games with an average of 17.8 ppg. He has led the team in scoring five times this season including a game-high 25 points in the loss at Indiana and a career-high 41 against Memphis.

Northwestern last played Sunday and lost 67-59 to Indiana. Reggie Hearn scored 22 for Northwestern, which refused to go away quietly. The Hoosiers led by as many as 17 in the first half and were up 31-17 at the break. But Northwestern (11-8, 2-4) responded with a 1-3-1 trap in the second half, leading to rushed shots by Indiana. The Wildcats pulled within five three times, but the Hoosiers hit seven of eight free throws in the final 57 seconds to prevail.

Minnesota defeated Northwestern 69-51 in the first game of the season series on Jan. 6. Twelve players scored for the Gophers, led by Hollins with 19. Minnesota outrebounded the Wildcats 47-20 with Mbakwe collecting 11 of the 47.
