Wednesday college basketball odds: No. 1 Duke at No. 25 Miami (FL)
Duke’s return to the top spot in the college basketball polls could be very short as the Blue Devils travel to the ACC’s only team yet to lose in conference play, surprising Miami. The Cans, however, opened as 3-point underdogs despite being 7-0 at home this year. Duke plays only its second true road game. Check our current lines here.
The Blue Devils, whose only loss came at NC State, haven’t played since beating Georgia Tech 73-57 last Thursday. Seth Curry scored 24 points and matched a career high with six 3-pointers. Mason Plumlee finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds after going just 2 for 12 during an awful first half, and Duke (16-1, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) shot 53 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes to bounce back from its only loss and snap a three-game losing streak when playing without the injured Ryan Kelly, who is out indefinitely with a foot injury. Freshman Rasheed Sulaimon broke out of a slump with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting after coming off the bench for the first time in his Duke career.
Miami entered the polls this week and escaped at Boston College 60-59 last Wednesday. Durand Scott hit four free throws in the closing 30 seconds and drew an offensive foul to help Miami extend its best conference start ever. Scott finished with 15 points, Kenny Kadji had 14 and Trey McKinney Jones 11 for the Hurricanes (13-3, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). It’s Miami’s best conference start since it went 5-0 to open its Big East season 5-0 in 1997-98. Miami center Reggie Johnson missed his eighth straight with a broken left thumb and won’t be back until next month. The Canes defense is holding opponents to less than 60 points per game this season. Miami has held 11 teams to less than 60 points this season, including six straight opponents.
Miami is 3-15 in the all-time series against Duke, which dates back to the 1962-63 season. The Canes are 2-6 against the Blue Devils at home, 0-2 at neutral sites and 1-7 on the road. Miami last faced Duke on Feb. 5, 2012 in a game that saw an overtime Hurricanes victory, 78-74. Duke was No. 5 at the time and it was Miami’s highest-ranked ACC win in school history. The Hurricanes are 0-6 all-time against No. 1 teams.
