Mountain West Tournament odds: Boise State vs. San Diego State

It’s a huge bubble game for both Boise State and San Diego State on Wednesday in the Mountain West Tournament quarterfinals in Las Vegas, with SDSU opening as a 4.5-point favorite on WagerWeb.com. The loser almost assuredly won’t be going to the Big Dance. Check our current lines.

These teams played in the regular-season finale, with Boise State winning 69-65. Derrick Marks scored 27 points, Anthony Drmic finished with 23 and Boise State led from start to finish. Marks scored 22 of his 27 in the second half and the Broncos (21-9, 9-7 Mountain West) held off a comeback attempt by the San Diego State to earn a split of the season series. Xavier Thames led San Diego State (21-9, 9-7) with 18 points while Jamaal Franklin added 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The first meeting also was close, with SDSU winning 63-62 at home on Feb. 6. After the Aztecs blew a 17-point first-half lead, Chase Tapley hit a 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds left to give San Diego State the win. Boise State’s Derrick Marks made the first of two free throws but missed the second and Tapley rebounded to set up the winning shot.

The preseason Mountain West favorite Aztecs have overcome a rash of injuries to three different starters and narrow defeats (four losses by four points or less) to put themselves in a position to extend their streak of consecutive NCAA?tournament berths to four. In addition to winning a league-best four tournament titles, San Diego State has also advanced to a conference-best four straight tourney finals. Among major conferences (ACC, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, PAC-12, SEC and Mountain West), only San Diego State and Ohio State have advanced to their tournament finals each of the last four seasons.

Boise State has been to the NCAA Tournament just once in the previous 18 seasons (2007-08), and five times in school history. Boise State is 1-5 all-time against San Diego State. The Broncos lost all three games against the Aztecs in their debut season in the league, two of which were by three-or-fewer points. Boise State dropped its only previous game in the Mountain West Conference Tournament, falling to 18th-ranked San Diego State in the quarterfinals last season (65-62). Franklin drained a 3-pointer as time expired.
