Baylor destroyed Hardin-Simmons 107-38 on Saturday. The real question is why Baylor was playing a Division III school. The 69-point win broke the school record for largest margin of victory, bettering a 121-55 win over Austin College in 1978. Taurean Prince had 21 points and 15 rebounds for Baylor. With the easy opponent and a quick turnaround for Monday’s game, coach Scott Drew did not play senior guard Pierre Jackson and 7-foot-1 freshman Isaiah Austin, who average a combined 33 points a game. Brady Heslip scored 15 points for the Bears, L.J. Rose added 14 points and 12 assists, Cory Jefferson and Rico Gathers each had 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Deuce Bello scored 10.
Oklahoma State bombed Texas Tech 79-45 on Saturday. Markel Brown scored 21 points, and Phil Forte hit four 3-pointers and had 19 points. After losing the Bedlam rivalry game last weekend against Oklahoma, the Cowboys (12-4, 2-2 Big 12) called this “Commitment Week” and dedicated themselves to returning to the stiff defense that had propelled them into the Top 25 earlier this season. They ended up holding Texas Tech to a season-worst 29 percent shooting.
Monday is the 70th series meeting between Baylor and Oklahoma State, and the Bears trail 19-50 in the all-time series. Baylor has won 7 of its last 11 games against Oklahoma State after winning just one of its 19 previous games vs. OSU. Baylor is looking for its third straight win vs. OSU for the first time — the Bears have won back-to-back games vs. OSU five times. Baylor is looking for its third-ever 4-1 or better start to Big 12 play (5-0 in 1997-98, 4-1 in 2007-08).
