Tuesday NBA odds: New York Knicks at Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics will have to make do without future Hall of Famer for the next few weeks as he battles inflammation in his injured left ankle. The good news for Tuesday’s game against the Knicks, however, is that New York big man Tyson Chandler is questionable to return from his own injury.
Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said the team will give KG two weeks off to recover. Ainge believes that Garnett initially injured the ankle against New Orleans on Wednesday, then played on it in Dallas on Friday. Garnett, who missed practice Monday, sat out Saturday’s game in Memphis and underwent an MRI when the team returned to Boston. Initial test results didn’t alarm team doctors, but Ainge noted the team is being overly cautious to ensure a healthy Garnett for the start of the postseason. Guard Courtney Lee also sat out practice Monday with a sprained left ankle but was listed as probable for Tuesday’s game.
The Celtics are struggling, having dropped four straight. They lost 110-106 at Memphis on Saturday. Paul Pierce led Boston with 26 points, while Jordan Crawford keyed a fourth-quarter rally, scoring 14 of his 21 points in the final frame. Jeff Green finished with 12 points, and Jason Terry had 10.
With 13 games remaining, the Celtics own a two-game edge over eighth-seeded Milwaukee, while any remaining hopes of climbing the East playoff ladder likely hinge on how Boston performs the next seven days, with two games against the currently second-seeded (and Atlantic Division-leading) Knicks, along with a visit from the fifth-seeded Atlanta Hawks on Friday.
New York has won four straight despite missing Chandler. It crushed the Raptors 110-84 on Saturday. Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points, and J.R. Smith added 25 points for the Knicks, who beat the Raptors for the second straight night. Kenyon Martin had 18 points and seven rebounds a night after he had 19 points and 11 rebounds in the Knicks’ victory in Toronto that clinched a playoff berth.
Chandler says there is “definitely a chance” that he’ll return to the lineup Tuesday against Boston. But the Knicks big man plans to proceed with caution due to a lingering neck injury. He has missed the Knicks’ last six games due to a bulging disk in his neck. The Knicks said last Monday that Chandler would miss “approximately” a week. New York is 4-2 in Chandler’s absence. Martin has performed well in Chandler’s absence. In the Knicks’ four-game winning streak, Martin has averaged 14.3 points and 7.5 rebounds and has hit 75 percent of his shots.
New York snapped an 11-game losing streak in Boston with an 89-86 victory at TD Garden on Jan, 24. Boston defeated New York 102-96 at the Garden on Jan. 7. Anthony has paced New York with 24.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in two meetings against Boston this season.
Boston was led by Rajon Rondo who record 23 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in one meeting against New York. Paul Pierce posted 22.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in the two games. Kevin Garnett added 13.5 points and 11.0 rebounds in two battles.
