NY Mets at NY Yankees – Mets LHP Jon Niese (4-2, 4.11) vs. Yankees LHP Andy Pettitte (3-2, 2.78): Niese fanned a career-high 10 batters in last Sunday’s win against St. Louis. Niese did not allow a run over six innings and will look to follow up that stellar effort in the series finale against the Yankees. … Pettitte was stellar in a 7 1/3 inning outing against the Rays on June 5, limiting Tampa Bay to just two hits while striking out 10. Pettitte has won three of his four Yankee Stadium starts this year and is 8-5 with a 3.69 ERA against the Mets.
Philadelphia at Baltimore – Phillies LHP Cliff Lee (0-3, 2.29) vs. Orioles RHP Jason Hammel (6-2, 2.97): Since the National League started to track earned runs in 1912, no Phillies pitcher has been winless with a 3.00 ERA or better after his first nine starts in a season until Lee this season. He hopes that streak ends in Baltimore. … Hammel tied his season-low with five innings, although the defense behind him didn’t help much. The 29-year-old allowed two runs (one earned) to Boston on Tuesday night.
Washington at Boston – Nationals RHP Jordan Zimmermann (3-5, 2.82) vs. Red Sox LHP Jon Lester (3-4, 4.64): Though he received a no-decision, Zimmermann was solid in Tuesday’s start against the Mets. In six innings, Zimmermann allowed two solo home runs and five hits while striking out five. … Lester is winless in his last three starts and has given up at least four runs in five of his last six outings. The southpaw is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two career starts against the Nationals with 16 strikeouts in 12 innings.
Chicago Cubs at Minnesota – Cubs RHP Ryan Dempster (1-3, 2.59) vs. Twins RHP Cole De Vries (1-1, 4.20): Dempster ended a string of 18 winless starts with a victory in his last outing against the Brewers. He threw five perfect innings and gave up three hits over seven scoreless innings. He’s faced the Twins twice, most recently June 25, 2006. … De Vries picked up his first career victory on Monday against the Royals, when he allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits over five-plus innings. After issuing five walks in his previous start, he didn’t walk a batter.
Houston at Chicago White Sox – Astros RHP Lucas Harrell (5-4, 4.70) vs. White Sox RHP Philip Humber (2-3, 5.68): Selected in the fourth round by the White Sox in the 2004 Draft, Harrell will face his former team for the first time. Claimed off waivers last year by the Astros, he’s coming off a win over St. Louis on Tuesday. … After putting together three quality starts in his past four trips to the mound, Humber struggled against the Blue Jays on Tuesday. He threw 37 pitches in the first inning and gave up five runs in five innings pitched.
LA Dodgers at Seattle – Dodgers RHP Chad Billingsley (3-4, 3.80) vs. Mariners RHP Blake Beavan (3-5, 5.22): Billingsley came up big to beat Cliff Lee in Philly with the kind of stingy effort the Dodgers have been waiting for. After allowing a first-inning run, he was lights-out the next six innings and kept his club close enough to seek out a late win. … Beavan allowed six runs on 10 hits over five innings in Tuesday’s loss against the Angels. He has allowed a whopping 14 homers this season.
